I was the only person to get off the train at 4 p.m. at Abisko in the Arctic Circle. The train disappeared into the night. I was alone, in the dark, with the temperature at -20°, as cold as Id expected it. I thought about giving up this trip and wished I were on my way back home but the train had gone and I could see a hotel ahead.

The girl at reception gave me the key to a cabin(小屋) as the rest of the hotel was closed. I went back outside. I could see by the light from the hotel and found the cabin easily. My hands were frozen as I turned the key in the lock and pushed the door which refused to move. I pushed it harder. I was thinking of breaking a window to prevent myself from freezing to death when I took my hand off the handle and the door opened gently towards me.

After recovering in the warmth of the cabin, which was actually very comfortable, I went outside again. I realized I wasnt completely alone as I saw car headlights on the road nearby. It was a clear evening full of red, green and blue light in the frozen air. It was so beautiful that I wanted to write a poem about it but I had no paper. Most of us think of intent(意图) as a kind of thing: you intend to go on vacation, but you really dont do much about it or you intend to go to the market, but some other things get in the way. In fact, intent is a powerful and dynamic mechanism(动态的机制). Its not just wishful thinking. Its the determination to act in a certain way.

Intent is so powerful that it can change the results of scientific experiments. Theres a well-known effect called the observer effect(观测者效应). A researchers hope--his or her intent--for an experiment may have effects on the result, so if a researcher wants the experiment to show improvement in an area, it will more likely show improvement because he has powerful intent in it.

If intent is the determination to act in a certain way, then the first thing to know is how much you want that thing.

Determination requires many things, and theres no way youre going to get them if you dont want something very much. You know the difference. The world has been looking for other livable planets for many years. In recent years, people believe that its time for humans to leave the Earth.

According to the history of the human race, we would probably try to remove the population of the new planet to make it our won. James Camerons movie Avatar is a great example of this.

We need to stop focusing our attention on running away and making others home our own home. Instead, we should start paying attention to the important things at hand. There are many resources to be used to fix what weve broken. There are solar panels which can serve better than people can imagine. There are several things to replace plastic, and there are hybrid cars that can completely replace common cars and of course theres wind power.

On Earth when something breaks, you dont fix it. Instead, you replace it, said a scientist. Thats what were doing not only with things on our planet, but also with the planet itself. Many believe its the best for the human race to find a new planet because ours is too bad to be saved. However, its this kind of wrong thinking that has kept us from doing anything important about the lives on our planet.
